5 Essential Tips for Designing Your Home Office

01 March 2017

Be Practical

It’s best to position your work area where there’s plenty of natural light, but if this is not feasible, you can always incorporate lighting into your design. Useful features, such as power and data sockets, do don’t forget to factor these in. Here at AK Fitted Interiors, we have found that it’s always best to opt for more sockets than you think you’ll need and include a charger drawer with power built in for your mobile phone and tablet.

Tone down the colour scheme

Keep the colours calm in your home office as this helps to promote a good working environment. Try mixing patterns and neutral colours with white paint to give the room a crisp, uplifting feel. You want the space to be tranquil and inviting, so steer clear of dark schemes unless you pair it with good lighting.

Get it right

Make sure your desk is the right height (around 70cm is perfect) and that the screen isn’t facing a window so you are not blinded by sunlight. Your home office should also be warm but not too hot. Underfloor heating would be ideal and is more practical than radiators if space is at a premium.

Tread carefully

Carpets can be a bit of a hindrance especially if you have office chairs with castors, so maybe consider timber flooring, it’s functional and looks great too. If you have an open plan room, you could think about mixing floor coverings to define the space and give it an individual feel.

Small really is beautiful

Many clients want a small but well-designed home office. The latest trend is to incorporate your home office into your kitchen, it’s a great location, with the kitchen being the hub of the home. Whilst you’re not using your desk, the kids could be using it for their homework, whilst you cook dinner you can keep an eye on them at the same time!
